So recently for english class we have been reading John Steinback's novel Of Mice and Men. Basically it's these two men, George and Lennie, and Lennie, who has the mind of a 7 year old and he's pretty slow but he's a huge strong guy, is accused of rape. Now he never raped that girl, I know this sounds weird but he enjoys touching soft things and the girl was wearing a "soft" dress so he decides to pet it...so she starts screaming and so George and Lennie start heading out of Weeds, where they're from. They end up in a ranch to get money and one day hope to fullfill their dreams. Georges dream is to own land and Lennies is to tend to the rabbits that will be on the land, since their soft. All these characters come in such as, Candy, Slim, Crooks, Carlson, and the ever annoying Curley. Of course other events happen in the story but..dude i'm not writing all of that =p. It seems as if things are going well that is until the end. You see curleys wife, who has no name due to Steinbacks dislike towards her, is somewhat of a tart...and in modern language that stands for a slut...yea I went there. So she sees that Lennie is alone, and even though he might seem innocent he's unaware, and so is she, of what he's capable of doing. So she starts strutting her stuff, flirting, giving him hints and because she finds out that Lennie enjoys soft things she decides to let him "pet" her hair...BIG MISTAKE. After awhile she tries to get away because she doesn't want him to mess up her hair but he only grabs on tighter. Then she decides to scream and go all nuts and while hes trying to shoosh her...he breaks her neck and kills her..nice huh? Lennie runs away and goes his and Georges secret hiding spot, So of course the men on that ranch retaliate. George doesn't know what to do but he does know that if they find Lennie, they will torture him to death and he can't let that happen. In the end George kills Lennie by shooting him in the head. If I recall it went alittle something like this "Take off your hat Lennie. the air feels fine."
Lennie removed his hat dutifully and laid it on the ground in front of him. The shadow in the valley was bluer, and the evening came fast. On the wind the sound of crashing in the brush came to them.
Lennie said, "Tell how it's gonna be."
George had been listening to the distant sounds. For a moment he was business-like. "Look acrost the river,Lennie an' I'll tell you so you can almost see it."
Lennie turned his head and looked off across the pool and up the darkening slopes of the Gabilans. "We gonna get a little place." George began. He reached in his side pocket and brought out Carlson's Luger; he snapped off the safety , and the handgun and laid it on the ground behind Lennie's head, at the place where the spine and the skull were joined.
A man's voice called from the river, and another man answered. "Go on," said Lennie.
George raised the gun and his hands shook, and he dropped his hand to the ground again.
"Go on," said Lennie. "How's it gonna be. We gonna get a little place."
"We'll have a cow," said George. "An' we'll have maybe a pig an' chickens....an' down the flat we'll have a ...little piece alfalfa-"
"For the rabbits," Lennie shouted
"For the rabbits," George repeated.
"And I get to tend the rabbits."
"An' you get to tend the rabbits."
Lennie giggles with happiness. "An' live on the fatta of the lan'."
"Yes."
Lennie turned his head.
"No, Lennie. Look down there acrost the river, like you can almost see the place."
Lennie obeyed him. George looked down at the gun.
There were crashing footsteps in the brush now. George turned and looked toward them.
"Go on George. When we gonna do it?"
"Gonna do it soon."
"Me an' you."
"You....an' me. Ever'body gonna be nice to you. Ain't gonna be no more trouble. Nobody gonna hurt nobody nor steal from 'em."
Lennie said, "I thought you was mad at me, George."
"No," said George. "No, Lennie. I ain't mad. I never been mad, an' I ain't now. Thats the thing I want ya to know." The voices came close now. George raised the fun and listened to the voices.
Lennie begged, "Le's go now. Le's get that place now."
"Sure, right now. I gotta. We gotta."
And george raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie's head. The hand shook violentley, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger. The crash of the shot rolled off the hills and rolled down again. Lennie jarred, and then settled slowly forward to the sand, and he lay without quivering.
George shivered and looked at the gun, and then he threw it from him, back up the bank, near the pile of old ashes.
Now, this story got me thinking. What would you do if you knew someone was going to torture your best friend? Would you kill him so they won't? Would you keep running? Lennie killed someone and might do it again, he was uncontrollable, but he was also George's friend and he didn't mean to do the things that he did. It's a hard decision....and might take a long time to think about...but what would you do?
Heres a trailer of the movie...it's a pretty good movie...check it out ..
